Three Canadian National SD40s lead a southbound L&N unit coal train out the L&N
yard on a sunny day in February 1984. These three ran as a set on the L&N. On the
northbound track passing the CN-led train is a northbound string of empties with a Family
Lines-painted caboose bringing up the rear. -Jay Thompson

Three SD40-2s on a southbound unit coal train sitting in the Seaboard System yard in
Etowah, TN. The first and third units are unpatched while the middle unit has been
patched. None of them were renumbered because this last order of SD40-2s for L&N, SCL
& CRR were ordered with consecutive numbers in preperation for the SBD merger. The
units here are L&N 8137, Seaboard System 8039 (ex-L&N 8039) and Clinchfield 8127,
